History Of FSI, CZ, Nagpur

Office Building of FSI (EZ), KolkataThe Forest Survey of India, Central Zone succeeded the "Pre-Investment Survey of Forest Resources" (PISFR), a project initiated in the year 1965 by Government of India with the sponsorship of FAO and UNDP at Jagdalpur in erstwhile Madhya Pradesh state now Chhattisgarh and was shifted from Jagdalpur to Nagpur (Maharashtra State) in 1974. In the year 1976, the National Commission on Agriculture (NCA) in its report recommended the creation of a National Forest Survey Organization for a regular survey of forest resources of the country leading to creation of FSI. As a sequel to this, the PISFR was renamed/reorganized as Forest Survey of India (FSI) on 1st June 1981.

Brief Working of FSI, CZ, Nagpur

To conduct assessment of Forest Cover of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Goa states and Dadra & Nagar Haveli , Daman & Diu UTs and Ground Truthing of FCM data.
To conduct Inventory of Forests and Tree outside Forests (Rural & Urban) areas in the States/UTs under the jurisdiction of FSI, CZ, Nagpur.
Collection of important NTFP resource species, Carbon storage and Biomass analysis data.
Consistency Checking & Entry of Forest, TOF(R) & TOF(U) inventory data using the specified online software and onward submission to the Headquarter.
Monitoring & Evaluation of Centrally Sponsored Schemes viz, CAMPA, FDA, IFMS and Green India Mission etc. funded by MoEF & CC.
To impart training to the State Forest Departments (SFDs) personnel on application of Remote Sensing, GIS & GPS in forestry and also on DSS- e-Green Watch.
To undertake special studies and project works on request of Central and State Governments.

Events

Sh. Saibal Dasgupta, the then Director General, FSI, Dehradun, visited the zonal office on 19/09/2017. He also inspected two Permanent Observation Plots (POP) laid out for pilot study in Nagpur district.
Sh. Saibal Dasgupta, the then Director General, FSI, Dehradun, also inspected ongoing field work in Gujarat State from 22nd. to 27th. December, 2017.
Sh. B.H. Naik, Assistant Director, of this zone attended a training programme sponsored by USAID on ‘ Forest Fires Management’ from 16th to 20th April, 2018 at Missoula Montana, USA.
International Bio-diversity Day was observed on 22/05/2018 in the zone. On this occasion, various programmes were organized at the Zonal Office to create awareness about bio-diversity. The zonal staff actively participated in Extempore Speech Competition, Essay writing, Identification of flora and fauna species and paintings were invited from the wards of officials of this office.
Similarly, World Environment Day was also observed in a befitting manner on 05/06/2018 in the zonal office. Sh. Suryakant S. Dhoke, Sr. Technical Director, NIC, Nagpur was invited as Chief Guest on the occasion. An exhibition of photographs taken by the staff during field visits was organized and the winners of the competitions on both the International Bio-diversity Day as well as the World Environment Day were given prizes at the hands of the Chief Guest. A video clip was screened on the occasion highlighting the manner in which plastic is polluting our environment.
The zone has been celebrating the occasion of Independence Day and Republic Day in the office premises every year.
The office has successfully celebrated ‘Swachh Bharat Aviyan’ on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday.
