Eastern Zone Kolkatta

Office Building of FSI (EZ), KolkataThe history of F.S.I., Eastern Zone goes back to 1974 when the zonal office of PRE INVESTMENT SURVEY OF FOREST RESOURCES was set-up in Kolkata primarily to look into the availability of forest raw materials in the zone for planning and establishment of wood-based industries. Later, when the organisation was renamed as FOREST SURVEY OF INDIA in 1981 due to the emerging demand for forest conservation rather than its exploitation, the Eastern Zone was entrusted to look into the forest inventory work in the states/UT in the eastern and north-eastern part of the country. Initially the office building was situated in a rented place of Hazra Road, but subsequently in the year 2006 it was shifted into its own building in Salt Lake City. A new sub-regional centre of FSI, EZ Kolkata has recently been opened in Byrnihat, Assam.
